Honda HR-V: EPS Symptom Troubleshooting - EPS Indicator Does Not Go OFF

NOTE: The indicator comes on when the reprogramming fails.

1. Problem verification:

  1. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.
  2. Check the EPS indicator.

Does the EPS indicator come on, then go off?

YES

Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time.

NO

Go to step 2.

2. DTC check:

Check for DTCs with the HDS.

Steering System - Testing & Troubleshooting

Are there DTCs indicated?

YES

Go to indicated DTC's troubleshooting.

NO

Go to step 3.

3. Gauge control module operation check:

Do the gauge control module self-diagnostic function.

Does the EPS indicator blink?

YES

Go to step 4.

NO

Replace the gauge control module.

4. Fuse check 1:

  1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
  2. Check the following fuse.

Is the fuse OK?

YES

The fuse is OK. Reinstall the fuse, then go to step 5.

NO

Replace the fuse. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, then to the OFF (LOCK) mode. If the fuse blows again, repair a short to ground in the No. C27 (7.5A) fuse circuit.

5. Fuse check 2:

Check the following fuse.

Is the fuse OK?

YES

The fuse is OK. Reinstall the fuse, then go to step 6.

NO

Replace the fuse. If the fuse blows again, repair a short to ground in the No. D1-1 (70 A) fuse circuit.

6. Open wire check (+B EPS line):

  1. Disconnect the following connector.

EPS control unit connector C (2P)

  1. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.

Is there battery voltage?

YES

The +B EPS wire is OK. Go to step 7.

NO

Repair an open in the +B EPS wire between the EPS control unit and the No. D1-1 (70 A) fuse.

7. Open wire check (IG1 VSA/EPS line):

  1. Disconnect the following connector.

EPS control unit connector B (6P)

  1. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.
  2. Measure the voltage between test points 1 and 2.

Is there battery voltage?

YES

The IG1 VSA/EPS wire is OK. Go to step 8.

NO

Repair an open in the IG1 VSA/EPS wire between the No. C27 (7.5 A) fuse in the under-dash fuse/relay box and the EPS control unit.

8. Open wire check (GND line):

  1. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode.
  2. Check for continuity between test points 1 and 2.

Is there continuity?

YES

The GND wire is OK. Go to step 9.

NO

Repair an open in the GND wire between the EPS control unit and body ground (G402).

9. Open wire check (F-CAN_H, F-CAN_L lines):

  1. Disconnect the following connector.

Gauge control module connector A (32P)

  1. Gauge control module connector A (32P)

Steering System - Testing & Troubleshooting

Is there continuity?

YES

The F-CAN_H and F-CAN_L wires are OK. Go to step 10.

NO

Repair an open in the F-CAN_H and/or F-CAN_L wire between the EPS control unit and the gauge control module.

10. EPS control unit check (update):

  1. Reconnect the following connectors.

EPS control unit connector B (6P)

EPS control unit connector C (2P)

Gauge control module connector A (32P)

  1. Update the EPS control unit if it does not have the latest software.
  2. Turn the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode, then the ON mode.
  3. Check the EPS indicator.

Does the EPS indicator come on, then go off?

YES

Troubleshooting is complete.

NO

Check for loose terminals and poor connections at the EPS control unit connectors. If the EPS control unit was updated and the symptom/indication is still present, replace the EPS motor/control unit.
